Brazilian Tanners’ National Day

06/08/2001

Seeking greater recognition for its contribution to the national economy, the Brazilian tanning sector has called upon the government to declare March 20 ‘National Tanners Day.’

The proposal was made recently to the National Congress by Julio Redecker, Federal Deputy for the State of Rio Grande do Sul and representative of the leather and shoe industry in the state.

According to Redecker, the leather sector is now a major force within the Brazilian economy that last year processed some 32 million hides and generated exports worth US$ 740 million.

March 20 was chosen by Redecker because it was the date on which the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry opened its Institute of the Environment for the Leather Sector, earlier this year.
