Industry in Kyrgyzstan suffers increased electricity charges for no reward

06/08/2001

Power workers appear to be among the few satisfied customers involved in Kyrgyzstan's energy sector, according to Kyrgyzstan's news agency Kabar. The clothing industry and the footwear and leather sector are reported to have raised prices significantly to offset a hike in electricity charges. Prices in the clothing industry are up 150% and in the footwear and leather industries by 65%.

The increased charges were intended to pay for a renovation of the energy sector infrastructure in the country. However, capital investment in the period has actually fallen by 60% and most of the money seems to have been used to pay for rises in power workers' salaries.
