Serb leathermakers protest at union law

Workers involved in the leather, footwear and metal trades were among those involved in protests against new labour laws in the Serbia last week.

More than 1,500 members of the Independent Trade Union of Serbia gathered outside the Sava Centre in Belgrade, where Labour Minister Dragan Milovanovic was presenting a new law aimed at reducing the state’s involvement in industry. The chairman of the Council of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Serbia, Milenko Smiljanic, said the law "threw workers' rights out the window and has curbed the strength of trade unions".

He added that the government would face daily protests until it revoked the law and organised a public debate on labour legislation.
