Bangladesh experiences exports earnings rise
Earnings from Bangladesh's export processing zones (EPZ) breached the billion U.S. dollar mark for the first time during the last fiscal year (2000-2001) according to a national financial newspaper. Industries that export from the EPZs include textiles, leather, plastic and paper products.
Figures for the zones start in 1983/4 when earnings were only 0.16 million dollars. Activity has since mushroomed to the present situation where around 163 types of industries operate from 20 different countries.
South Korea is the single largest investor in the EPZs, accounting for 47 separate industries. The zones are continuing to attract entrepreneurs because the infrastructure and facilities offered are among the best on offer in the region.
