Italian trade blossoms in Spring

Figures released last week by the Italian national statistics agency ISTAT show that during May, exports to non-EU countries were up 8.1% year on year and imports up 3.1%. The result was a positive trade balance of L531 billion, compared to a negative balance of L434 billion in May 2000.


With regard to trade with EU countries during April, exports were up 13% compared to April 2000, with imports climbing by 5.3%. Again, the balance of trade was positive at L184 billion, compared with a negative balance of L1345 billion in April 2000. Total exports during April were 14,1% up year-on-year and imports up by 10,1%. The balance of trade overall for the month was positive: L738 billion compared with a negative balance of L665 billion in April 2000.
