Zambia sets out stall for footwear industry improvements
Zambia’s Small Enterprise Development Board (SEDB) is reported to have allocated K300 million ($82,000) to a hides improvement project, aimed at enhancing the quality of country’s leather products.
Speaking at a press briefing announcing the project, SEDB executive director Chanda Mongo said 90 per cent of shoes and other leather products on the Zambian market were imported and yet most of these were made by small scale entrepreneurs.
He said the project was aimed at helping Zambian businesses tap into this trend and that loans would be issued to small scale businessmen as soon as funds become available. Mr Mongo said the programme was also aimed at encouraging small businesses to work together and the creation of joint marketing initiative between companies.
