Vietnam’s National Leather and Footwear Corporation last week outlined its plans to increase the sector’s exports and raise the profile of its members’ products abroad.

As well ramping up its promotional activities in the crucial markets of Japan, the EU and Eastern Europe, the Corporation says it intends embark on a new programme of investment in capital equipment. However, it says its member organisations continue to be hampered by a high interest rates and escalating raw materials costs.

Figures released by the Corporation show that in the first four months of 2001, exports were up by only 0.3% year-on-year to $487.5 million.
