Economic recovery in Nagornyy Karabakh stymied by stoppages

The leather trade was one of several cited by the president of the Central Asian Republic of Nagornyy Karabakh last week as being particularly prone to stoppages.

Speaking at a briefing with journalists on the country’s unemployment problems, President Arkadiy Gukasyan said that the majority of citizens did not have permanent jobs and were now classified as being ‘socially vulnerable.’

He said the situation was being worsened by stoppages in the newly-opened private enterprises which are widely seen as being the country’s best hope for economic revival – particularly those involved in the production of leather goods, jewellery and tea.

Failures in the delivery of raw materials and the non-fulfilment of obligations by partners were among the main reasons for the stoppages, Gukasyan said.
