Rosier future Ugandan/Italian leather trade?

18/06/2001

The leather industry is one of several that could learn from the success of a business partnership importing fresh cut roses from Uganda to Italy, the head of a UN-sponsored Italian/Ugandan trade body said last week.

Robert Schuller, head of the Investment Promotion Unit at the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), cited M.K. Flora as the kind of business his organisation was looking to promote.   Established as a joint venture between Italian and Ugandan businessmen, Schuller reported M.K. Flora had experienced considerable success since beginning operations in early 2001. As such, he said, it provided an excellent model for other Ugandan/Italian joint business ventures. These include those involved in the production of leather and textiles, which the unit has specifically targeted for future promotions.

UIA's Assistant Director, Ruth Lwetabe said three awareness workshops on identifying Italian business partners had already been held.
