Tough times for Australian footwear and apparel producers

Footwear, clothing and textile businesses in New South Wales were among the worst hit by Australia’s ongoing manufacturing downturn in March, a new survey has revealed. However, the prospects for all manufacturers in September appear brighter.

According to a newly-released survey by the Australian Business and the Commonwealth Bank, gross domestic product for the country’s manufacturing sector fell by 3.9 per cent over the 12 month period to March 2001 and by 1.3 per cent in the March-end quarter alone .
