Indonesia turns back leather imports
Indonesia has turned back 27 containers of tanned hides to the various countries they came from, citing foot and mouth fears as the reason.
The containers were returned to those countries where the disease is present including the United Kingdom and Holland, Argentina, Brazil and India, as well as Malaysia, Thailand and Hong Kong. They been held ‘on decision’ at the port of Tanjung Priok, having been despatched before the country announced its ban on leather imports.
The secretary general of the Indonesian leather footwear producers’ Association, Djimanto, said 25 more containers of leather are due to arrive at the port and that it was highly likely that these too would be turned back.
