Leather trade slated for wider role in Ugandan economic regeneration
The leather trade was one of several identified by the Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni last week as offering an ideal platform for economic regeneration in the country.
Speaking to a delegation of senior ministers from Kenya, Museveni reported that his government had drawn plans to diversify Ugandan agriculture, so as to fight poverty and reduce dependence on foreign aid. As part of this process, he said the onus should now be on adding value to all exports like textiles, leather, beef, coffee, tea, fruits and petroleum products.
During the same address, Museveni reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the East African Federation and the process of regional integration which he hoped would lead to the development of new markets in the region, and better access to the markets of the developed world.
