Travel products push up US leather retailer sales in May
Comparable store sales declined by 7.8 percent at Wilsons The Leather Experts in May, compared to a 0.6 percent increase for the same period in 2000. Overall sales for the period increased by 58.3 percent to $29.7 million, pushed up by the acquisition in the past seven months of travel product and luggage stores under the El Portal, Bentley's luggage and California Luggage Outlet brands.
Chairman and CEO Joel Waller was optimistic about the overall results, pointing out that the Minneapolis company is "in the process of replenishing our merchandise offerings with key items for early summer."
