First Czech BSE case confirmed – British farmers to sue France for ignoring EU ruling
Czech's State Veterinarian Office has officially confirmed first BSE case in
the country.
A laboratory test carried out in the town of Jihlava yielded a positive result
on a cow taken from a farm from in Duszejov (on the Czech - Moravian Heights).
"On this coming Friday (June 8) we shall know the second test results and if they also test positively the sample will be delivered to another lab in Germany for final test" - said Jirzi Felczarek spokesman from Czech Ministry of Agriculture. It is also expected that the Veterinarian Office will also reveal on Friday all protective measures taken by the office to prevent the disease from spreading in the country.
In a separate development, British farmers were granted the right to take France to the European Court of Justice for ignoring an EU ruling to lift its ban on British beef due to fears about BSE. The National Farmers’ Union of the United Kingdom is seeking millions of pounds in damages from France, which is the only European country not to comply with the ruling.
