USDA lifts import restrictions on non-foot and mouth disease-affected countries

04/06/2001

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) last week lifted its March 13 foot and mouth disease (FMD) EU import restrictions – but only with regard to those countries where the disease has not been diagnosed.

The development means Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden are now all exempted from the restrictions, which will continue to apply to The United Kingdom, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Greece.

The USDA says the lifting of the March restrictions does not alter other enforcements that were already in place with regard to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
