Brazilian leather and shoemakers to toe the line in energy cutbacks

04/06/2001

Along with the country’s food, beverage, textile and automobile producers, Brazil’s leather and shoemakers have been told by the government to reduce their energy consumption by 15% - or face electricity blackouts.

The drastic measures have been implemented in response to Brazil’s worst energy crisis for 30 years. A sustained drought has dried up reservoirs at the country’s hydroelectric plants, which provide 90% of the country’s electricity. The rationing programme will continue for an indefinite period and is aimed at reducing the country’s total energy consumption by 20%.
