Export potential of Indian leather and leather goods highlighted
Leather and leather products are among a basket of products identified by the Export Import Bank of Indian (EXIM) as being ripe for greater levels of export trade with Australia.
In its report: "Australia and New Zealand: A Study of India's Trade and Investment Potential" the bank noted that India had not been able to make the same inroads into the Australian and New Zealand markets as other Asian countries such as China, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. This was in spite of the tremendous export potential of the Indian manufacturing sector, encompassing readymade garments and yarns, leather and leather goods and marine and engineering products.
"During the nineties, only around two per cent of India's total exports went to Australia and New Zealand and three per cent of total imports originated from these countries," the study said.
