Land purchased for Pakistan tannery zone

28/05/2001

The creation of a new tannery zone in the Pakistan town of Sialkot moved a step closer last week when 200 acres of land were allocated for the facility.

Located on the Sialkot-Sambrial road, the land was purchased at a cost of Rs60 million, ($963,000) 25 percent of which was provided by the private sector and 75 percent by the government, as an interest-free loan.

The idea of the zone is that it will provide a dedicated area for the town’s existing tanneries, which will all be relocated to the site. The tanneries will be served by extensive effluent treatment facilities, minimising their impact on the environment. The site was chosen by reason of its location away from residential and agricultural land.
