An important milestone in the United Kingdom's continuing recovery from foot and mouth disease was reached last week when, for the first since since the epidemic began 94 days ago, no new outbreaks were reported in the space of a single day.

At 7 pm on Thursday, the cut-off point for daily reports, the total number  of outbreaks stood at 1,607, the same as on Wednesday.
