British footwear sales up, production down in April
British retail sales in April rose at their fastest annual rate since the spring of 1998, signalling continuing strong consumer confidence despite the global economic slowdown.
Figures released by the Office of National Statistics also show that sales of footwear, clothing and textiles grew at their highest rate since records began fifteen years ago, achieving a 6.3% increase over April 2000’s figures. However, production of the same commodities slowed by a considerable margin, as sterling strength and slower overseas conditions made overseas trading conditions more difficult.
