Colombia: hide export restrictions to continue
The Colombian government has decided to renew its export restriction programme covering hides and skins.
Introduced in December, the original programme was imposed as a ‘fast track’ method of improving supplies to the country’s leather trade, which suffered severe hide shortages throughout 2000, and also keeping prices within a specified 5% price band. As well as banning the export of green hides, the programme restricted wet blue exports to 5000 tons during its four-month duration.
Effective from May 1, the new programme will carry the same restrictions forward for another four months. Its progress will also be monitored by a government-formed committee which will report back on its effectiveness at the end of the four-month period.
