Leather goods help drive up Indian exports in 2000-01

Together with marine engineering and electronics manufacturing, India’s leather goods trade was one of several ‘star’ sectors that helped the country boost its exports by 20% in 2000-01, exceeding the government’s targets set for the year by 2%.

The country’s total exports brought in $44.1 billion, 19.83% more than last year's $36.8 billion. However, Commerce and Industry Minister Murasoli Maran said there was no room for complacency. "The high growth rate should be accelerated to corner at least 1%share of global trade," said the minister.
