Russia looks to stem outflow of hides to Europe

30/04/2001

To boost revenues and help protect the domestic leather and shoemaking sectors, Deputies in the Russian state parliament (Duma) last week tabled a motion for increased duties on the export of finished leather and raw hides.

The suggestion was made by the government’s Agroindustrial depute group to the head of Russian government, Mikhail Kasyanov, and unanimously supported by all 312 Deputies belonging to the group.

The suggestion was made against the background of increasing raw material and wet blue exports to Europe. Domestic footwear and leather goods producers fear they are being priced out of the supply chain, now that many European manufacturers are being forced to look east - and are driving up prices proportionately.
