Mandatory livestock price reporting introduced for US meat packers and importers
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has implemented a mandatory livestock reporting program that requires packers with an annual slaughter figure in excess of 125,000 cattle (100,000 swine, 75,000 lambs) to provide reports on all transactions involving the purchase of livestock.
Under the program, packers are now required to provide news reports on cattle purchases and packer-owned cattle and sheep information. The programme makes extensive use of electronic data collection systems, which the USDA says were trialed extensively with those packers and importers that use them, before implementation began.
