Italian leather goods exports up by 41% in 2000
Figures newly released by AIMPES, the national association of Italian leather goods manufacturers, paint an extremely positive picture for the year 2000, with exports increasing by 41% to L2,438.3 billion ($1.129 billion).
By comparison, exports of non-leather luggage, belts and bags earned L1,064.5 billion (up 33.8% on the year before) - the combined figures for leather and non leather items being as follows:

Imports of these items climbed from 1999’s figure of L1,082.5 billion to L1,355.5 billion - an increase of 25.2% - the vast majority being non-leather items which accounted for 1,076 billion lira of the total. Leather goods imports amounted to only L279.5 billion – a 24.9% increase on the year before.
