Fake leather warning issued to New Zealand consumers

New Zealanders are being warned to be on their guard for fake leather goods being passed off as the real thing.

The warning was issued by New Zealand’s Commerce Commission which recently prosecuted the shopping retailer Kmart for advertising ‘leather’ belts which in some cases did not contain any hide at all.

Though the retailer is now offering refunds to anyone who bought the belts, the commission says the investigation suggests that the misrepresentation of non-leather goods is an industry-wide problem, and could be costing consumers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
