The National Department of Statistics of the African state of Mali reports that the country’s livestock sector last year contributed CFA franc 147.9 billion ($204.5 million) to the country's GDP, or 9.7 per cent.

It also accounted for CFA franc 28.08 billion of the country’s export earnings – ranking third after cotton and gold.

The prospects for marketing leather and hides were also on the agenda of a workshop held last week in Bamako by the Malian Livestock and Meat Office (OMBEVI). According to estimates supplied at the workshop, in 1998 Malian livestock numbered 6.2 million head of cattle, 6 million sheep and 8.9 million goats.
