Argentinean sheepskin exporter lands in controversy on Falkland Islands

09/04/2001

The Falkland Islands newspaper, Penguin News, last week reported that the Argentine sheepskin and wool exporter Matias Suarez Anzorena had arrived in the Islands to develop contacts with producers of leather, wool and other sheep-related products.

Mr Anzorena’s mode of arrival – by private jet – caused some raised eyebrows locally, because most Falkland Islanders prefer their visitors to make use of the government-subsidised airline, LaChile.

The same newspaper report noted interest from other parts of the world in Falklands agricultural products. The Riverside Inn at Aymestry in Herefordshire, United Kingdom, had registered its interest in purchasing good quality Falklands beef or lamb, while an abattoir owner in Patagonia, Argentina, was looking to purchase 10,000-20,000 live sheep.
