100-year old Polish tannery closes
One of Poland’s last state-own tanneries, the Welskor Tannery in Lidzbark (north-east Poland), has closed.
Until recently, the 100 year-old wet-blue plant was one of the town’s largest production facilities, employing a staff of 40. However, it appears to have got into serious difficulties last year, when the local government appointed a new managing director. Though the company was already experiencing cash flow problems, the new man’s policy of selling off the tannery’s machines one by one appears only to have hastened its demise. The town mayor, Jan Rogowski, says that despite the tannery’s closure, the local authority is still searching for a buyer.
