The Brazilian Shoe Industry exceeded its own export estimates for the year 2000, chalking up a 21% increase in turnover and an 18% increase in volumes exported.

According to information provided by Abicalçados – the Brazilian Association of the Footwear Industry - from January to December 2000, the country shipped 162.5 million pairs, worth a total of US$ 1,546 thousand million, to numerous countries around the globe. This compares with 137 million pairs worth US$ 1.27 billion, exported in 1999. The average price of a pair of Brazilian shoes for export was US$ 9.31 in 1999 and US$ 9.52 in 2000.

At the beginning of 2000, Abicalçados estimated that shoe exports would grow by 15% but that target was exceeded as the year went by, thanks mainly to a new Government currency exchange policy that successfully promoted trade with the USA and the other Latin-American countries, especially Argentina.
