Work starts on construction of European high-tech tannery
Work has started on the construction on a tanning plant which, when it becomes operational in October, will set new standards in environmental compatibility and efficiency levels within the European industry
Commissioned by Scan-Hide A.m.b.a., a division of the meat processing company, Danish Crown, the new facility is located at Vester Skerninge on the island of Fyn, in Denmark.
Scan-Hide already handles the preparation of 90% of all hides produced in Denmark, where the hide accounts on average for approximately 15% of the total value of the animal. By providing hides processed to wet blue or wet white stage, the new facility is expected to find a ready market in a country where most tanneries prefer to outsource their pretanning requirements, because of increasing levels of specialisation.
The plant will use much less water than conventional tanning facilities and output far lower levels of wastewater. It is expected to achieve full production capacity within two to three years of opening and employ 25 to 35 staff at start-up.
Says Scan-Hide’s managing director Anders Autzen: "As well as being a logical extension of our activities, the new facility should prove instrumental in helping us sell more skins on behalf of the Danish livestock sector. As such, it represents excellent news for both our suppliers and the leather production as a whole."
