Environmental award for Scottish tannery
W J & J Lang Limited, one of the UK’s largest tanneries based in Paisley, Scotland, has won a national award which recognises the effectiveness of the company’s energy and environmental management systems.
At the recent Envirenergy 2001 environmental conference, the company was announced as the overall winner of the ScottishPower Envirenergy Award – an environmental awareness initiative sponsored by the energy supply company, ScottishPower.
Langs was chosen from companies representing a variety of industrial and commercial sectors across the UK. Employing 67 people, the tannery impressed the judges through its commitment to the international environmental standard ISO 14001, which resulted in the company has resulted in the company reducing its energy consumption by 20% since 1995. Langs was the first tannery in the world to achieve ISO14001 and also the first wet blue tannery to achieve ISO 9002.
Established in 1872, Langs is the oldest manufacturing company in Paisley, producing 9,000 hides per week. The company has recently been featured in a case study authored by the UK government’s energy efficiency ‘best practice’ programme.
