Shift to electric cars makes its mark in Germany
German automotive industry association VDA has reported 322,700 as the total number of vehicles produced in the country in the month of July.
It pointed out that this was down by 6% on the figure for the same month in 2025. But VDA added that the main reason for this fall was that production had stopped for several weeks at one unnamed factory.
It explained that the automotive company that runs the plant had decided to refit it for the production of electric vehicles instead of petrol and diesel cars.
New passenger car registrations for July were 268,100. VDA said more than 40% of these new registrations were for electric vehicles with a total of nearly 110,000 units.
It said this was the second-highest monthly figure for registrations of electric vehicles that the industry in Germany has seen, and the highest since environmental subsidies to encourage consumers to buy electric vehicles ended in 2022.
