Indonesian institutions advance sustainable leather education
Three Indonesian universities have completed the ELEGTEC International Summer Course 2026, bringing together students, academics, researchers and industry representatives to explore sustainable leather production and innovation.
Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS) and Universitas Mataram (UNRAM) hosted programmes from May 11-22, while Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) ran its course from May 18 to June 5. Activities included lectures, practical training, laboratory work and visits to leather industry facilities.
The courses focused on a range of sustainability themes. UNHAS examined halal slaughtering, preservation and sustainable tanning processes, while UNRAM explored eco-friendly leather production for small island communities. UGM's programme addressed sustainable and green leather technology, including bio-based innovations for leather processing.
Organisers said the initiative strengthened technical knowledge, encouraged environmentally responsible practices and promoted collaboration across Indonesia's leather sector as part of the wider ELEGTEC project.
