The Italian footwear sector achieved export revenues of €3 billion in the first quarter of 2026, a fall of 1.6% compared to the same period last year.

On releasing the figures, industry association, Assocalzaturifici, said there had been “a complex backdrop” to the performance of the Italian footwear sector during the quarter. The organisation’s president, Giovanna Ceolini, said member companies had raised concerns about the market situation in their forecasts at the start of the year.

She said specific concerns included rising raw material and energy costs, as well as geopolitical tensions.

However, Assocalzaturifici’s figures also show “more encouraging signals” in the domestic market. Consumers in Italy spent nearly €1.3 billion on footwear in the first three months of 2026, an increase of 1.7% year on year.
