This time, our report on the global leather pipeline flags up a good idea from a leather manufacturer in China and says it could present a positive way forward for companies in other parts of the industry. Demand for leather among finished product manufacturers remains slow, Market Intelligence says.

This is despite low raw materials prices. It argues that this shows that “the old assumption” that lower prices will bring buyers back appears no longer to hold. Instead, it says a project in China in which an unnamed leather manufacturer has worked closely with a fashion designer, using a major fashion event to present together a collection they have worked on.

It contends that this positive attempt to become “more deeply involved in the actual product development process” shows that leather manufacturers can be not only suppliers but true partners to designers and brands. It concludes that this is a much better approach than simply waiting for the old demand to return.
