Workers demonstrate over Volkswagen closure threat

Protests have taken place at the headquarters of automotive group Volkswagen amid reports that the company is planning the closure of four factories in Germany and the shedding of up to 100,000 jobs.

Volkswagen’s leadership group met at group headquarters in Wolfsburg on July 9 to discuss a proposal to close VW factories in Hanover, Emden and Zwickau and an Audi plant at Neckarsulm.

Trade union IG Metall said 400 people took part in a demonstration and warned that if the closures go ahead, “major conflict” between the company and its workforce could follow.
