Minister targets leather export growth

India’s leather and footwear industry is targeting export growth to at least US$15 billion over the next five to six years, according to comments from Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.

Growth is expected to be driven by new free trade agreements, market diversification, improved product quality, design and branding, and a greater focus on sustainable production.

While India has expanded trade access through agreements covering a growing number of markets, around 77% of leather goods exports currently go to just 15 countries. The industry has also been encouraged to increase use of testing facilities to support quality improvements and competitiveness.
