Leather chemicals group Smit & Zoon has announced the death of its former chief executive Joost Smit. He was 83. 

Mr Smit was the sixth-generation owner of the company and served as its chief executive until 2006. It said he had played “a defining role” in shaping Smit & Zoon into the company it is today. 

In a statement, the company said Joost Smit had “guided the organisation, with vision, dedication and an unwavering love for the company, through decades of growth and development”.
