US beef sector welcomes progress after China summit

The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has welcomed an increase in the number of packer plants that will be authorized to export beef to China. The changes have come in the wake of a state visit to Beijing in mid-May by US president, Donald Trump.

Customs authorities in China have given 425 operators in the US permission to resume exports of beef to China. USMEF said the renewal of earlier permits for these companies to ship beef to China was overdue.

In addition, 77 new beef producers in the US are now registered to send their products to China. However, USMEF said 38 US beef establishments “remain suspended”.

Its chief executive, Dan Halstrom, said: “USMEF greatly appreciates US beef access being prioritised at the summit meeting between President Trump and President Xi of China. Renewal of registrations is a critical step forward for US beef exports to China. We await more details.”

He said it was “excellent news for the US beef industry”.
