Rwanda changes location of planned tannery park
Rwanda will construct its planned national leather tannery park in Gicumbi District instead of Bugesera after a feasibility study found the original location unsuitable.
Prudence Sebahizi, Minister of Trade and Industry, told parliament’s Committee on State Budget and Patrimony that the relocation will not affect the project’s delivery timeline, with completion still targeted for 2029.
The decision follows a technical review that led the government to identify an alternative site after the Bugesera Special Economic Zone was deemed unable to host the facility.
The tannery park forms part of Rwanda’s broader garment and leather development programme, which includes support for exhibitions and industry promotion, and is intended to strengthen domestic production and exports across the leather value chain.
