Import volumes of raw hides still going up in China
China’s imports of raw hides and skins increased in volume in the first quarter of 2026.
In the January-March period, tanners and traders in China brought 365,000 tonnes of raw hides and skins.
In terms of volume, this represents growth of 1.9% compared to the same period last year. In terms of value, these raw material imports cost $290 million, a decrease of 6.1% year on year.
Over the three-month period, 150,000 tonnes of semi-finished leather also came into China, with a value of $200 million. This represents falls of 10.3% in volume and of 20.2% in value.
Imports of finished leather reached volumes of just over 8,100 tonnes, costing $120 million, falls of 11.9% and 8%, respectively.
