Four people have died following an accident at a  tannery in Runkel, north-west of Frankfurt, according to officials in the state of Hesse.

Three died at the scene and one later in hospital. One other person was injured and taken to hospital.

Authorities said the exact cause of the incident at the Beuleke tannery was not yet clear but that exposure to chemicals, possibly hydrogen sulfide, was a possible explanation. At the time of writing, the names of the people who died had not been made public.
