The North Face chooses leather for bag upgrade

Outdoor clothing and accessories brand The North Face has announced a special edition of its Base Camp duffel bag, using leather instead of synthetic materials.

Duffel bags have been around for centuries and were probably originally made from the coarse wool fabric associated with the town of Duffel in Belgium.

Versions in canvas or nylon became popular in the twentieth century. The North Face introduced its Base Camp duffel bag in the 1980s to provide outdoor enthusiasts with a durable product for carrying camping and climbing equipment.

Since the millennium, the Base Camp has been a popular piece of mainstream luggage, with The North Face no longer pitching it exclusively for use on expeditions. This popularity has now led to the new limited-edition leather version.

In an Instagram post, The North Face said that the Base Camp had been “born to thrive in chaos” but would now receive “a premium leather upgrade”. It added that its use of leather to make this version of the bag would give “rugged roots a refined finish”.

The leather bag is available already in North America and Europe, but in limited volumes. It will launch in Asia in June.
