Leather Futures explores craft and repair at CSM
London art school Central Saint Martins (CSM) recently hosted Leather Futures, a three-day programme of workshops, masterclasses and discussions, as part of London Repair Week.
The initiative brought together designers, makers, researchers and students to explore leather in relation to provenance, craftsmanship, repair and sustainability, positioning the material within a broader system linking ecology, industry and skills.
Speakers included Bill Amberg of Bill Amberg Studio, Jonathan Burton of Cockpit and Mary Wing To of Chanel Atelier, alongside contributors including Sara Grady, Jack Millington and Joyce Addai-Davis. Topics included repair, aftercare, regenerative systems, traceability and end-of-life considerations.
Hands-on sessions were led by practitioners such as Martina Spetlova and Liz Ciokajlo, focusing on craft skills and material knowledge.
The programme highlighted the role of education and industry collaboration in supporting skills development and more responsible material use. It was supported by The Leathersellers’ Foundation, The Worshipful Company of Saddlers and The Worshipful Company of Curriers, and reached more than 150 staff and students.
