Record prices in sight for heavy steers in Australia

18/03/2026

Heavy steer prices in Australia rose to one of the highest levels in history in mid-March.

Liveweight prices at the end of trading on March 12 reached an average of 465.29 cents per kilo. This is higher than the recent peak of 464 cents per kilo, which the market reached in November 2025.

The record price for heavy steers in Australia is 471 cents per kilo, which the market reached in October 2021.

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) has said high processor demand for finished cattle, especially well finished grass-fed animals, was driving a “surge in prices”.

MLA’s manager for market information, Stephen Bignell, said the March 12 price did not include sales from some big markets in Victoria because of a public holiday there. He explained that, when these markets contribute to reports again, there would be potential for the national average to move “even closer to the all-time record” in the coming weeks.
