EU ‘Environmental Omnibus’ package still too vague, VDA says
German car industry association VDA, Andreas Rade, has welcomed the European Commission’s aim of reducing bureaucracy in its new ‘Environmental Omnibus’.
The Commission published the ‘Environment Omnibus’ on December 10, describing it as a legislative package that will simplify changes to environmental regulations and cut red tape.
VDA managing director, Andreas Rade, reacted by saying the aim of reducing “excessive bureaucracy” was welcome.
He explained: “While European environmental regulations often have important objectives, their practical implementation requirements lead to considerable bureaucratic costs, time expenditure and administrative overload, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises.”
But according to Mr Rade, some points in the package “remain too vague”. He offered the future digital product passports regulation and a revision of the REACH regulation on chemicals as examples.
He said there needed to be clear guidelines and what he called a consistent focus on real simplification. “The goal must be to increase transparency and promote the circular economy,” the VDA managing director said. “The Circular Economy Act, which will be presented next year, must set the right course in this regard.”
