COTANCE supports updated action plan for the European tanning industry

12/12/2025

COTANCE and industriAll Europe have adopted a Joint Work Programme for 2026 to 2030, alongside an action plan for 2026 to 2027, after meeting with the European Commission in Brussels.

With most EU industrial sectors under pressure, the partners said the leather industry needs coordinated action to strengthen resilience, investment and competitiveness.

The programme is built around three themes - People, Planet and Prosperity.

Under People, the partners will work on protecting leather authenticity, improving training pathways, promoting health and safety and supporting social dialogue in all Member States.

The Planet section focuses on allocation rules for hides and skins, recognition of leather’s durability, supply chain traceability and preparing the industry for ecodesign and Digital Product Passport obligations.

Prosperity covers competitiveness, fair trade, green investment frameworks and measures to counter misleading environmental claims.

The action plan sets practical steps for the next two years, including contributions to the review of the Textile Labelling Regulation, joint work on skills needs, updates to safety tools, preparation for new due diligence rules and support for EU research opportunities.

COTANCE said the programme provides a clear framework for close cooperation with industriAll Europe and the European Commission through to 2030.
