Market Intelligence: ‘Astonishing’ lack of EUDR awareness
The latest Leatherbiz Market Intelligence newsletter went live on November 11.
This edition makes the point that the disruption and uncertainty that the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is causing is further reaching than some in the hide and leather supply chain had though.
“With the massive decline in leather demand for European producers and the simultaneous rise in demand for proteins, new trade-flows have emerged,” the report says. It adds that the number of people who regard the protein sector as “the solution for the utilisation of cattle hides” is increasing.
But it goes on to point out that using cattle hides to meet the demand for proteins is just as likely to be affected by the application of EUDR as leather production is.
“It is astonishing that many people, starting with slaughterhouses, are still not aware of this,” Market Intelligence says.
