German car market still way short of pre-covid levels, despite electric surge

German car manufacturers produced 3.5 million passenger cars in the first ten months of 2025. This is an increase of 1% year on year, but national automotive industry association VDA said the figure was 12% below the numbers for 2019.

Germany’s exports of passenger cars between January and October reached 2.7 million, which is in line with the figure for 2024, but 10% down on 2019.

VDA also said consumers in the domestic market in Germany had registered 2.4 million new passenger cars of all types and from all origins in the first ten months of 2025. This figure represents an increase of 1% compared to 2024, but a decline of 22% compared to 2019.

Of the new cars registered this year so far, 683,400 were electric vehicles. VDA pointed out that this is an increase of 47% year on year.
